If you’ve trained long enough, chances are you’ve encountered an injury or two from pushing yourself. While injuries can be frustrating, they’re not unusual in the fitness journey. Today, I want to share several principles to follow when dealing with an injury.
Disclaimer: This is NOT Medical Advice
Before we dive in, it’s important to note that this is not medical advice. If you’re dealing with an injury, you should always consult with a qualified medical professional for diagnosis and treatment. At Wallace Fitness Center, we have medical providers who can help you with this.
Introduction
My name is Alex Wallace, and I’ve been in the fitness space for over 10 years. I own Wallace Fitness Center, a comprehensive wellness center located in Delmont, Pennsylvania. We have medical providers and professional trainers on staff to assist you with all things health and wellness. Now, let’s get into the principles you can follow when dealing with an injury.
Principle 1: Train Around It
Rarely are you so injured that you can’t train any part of your body. Even if you have an injury on one side, research shows that training the uninjured side can help the injured side recover faster. Moreover, it’s crucial to maintain your overall fitness to avoid becoming susceptible to injuries in other areas. A strong body is a healthy body!
Principle 2: Identify What Aggravates the Injury
In my experience, injuries are often aggravated by several factors:
- Velocity: Does it hurt when moving at normal speed? How about at a slower pace?
- Load: Is the pain more pronounced when the weight gets heavy?
- Volume: Does it hurt when you do too much in a single session or over the week?
- Range of Motion: Does the range of motion impact your pain levels?
By identifying these variables, you can train around them effectively.
Principle 3: Speed Up Your Recovery
There are several strategies you can employ to aid your recovery:
Stay Healthy: Continue to move as much as you can, ensuring you’re getting restorative sleep and proper nutrition. These principles not only help with recovery from workouts but also from injuries.
Utilize Available Services: We offer various services at Wallace Fitness Center to help speed up recovery. These include:
